New studies show that the preistorical elephants were amphibiens, who lived in the Eocen period, 37 million years ago. The scientists analized the izotophs from the teeth enamel and showed that this elephants were semi-aquatic mammal, who spent the day in the water and ate aquatic plants. From the molecular dates the elephants have the same properties with the sirieniens (sea cows).
